ML POZNANSKI

Biography

ML Poznanski, born in 1984 in Hull, UK, now lives and works in Warsaw, London and Antwerp. She studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and Philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London. Coming from a multidisciplinary practice background involving theatre, music, performance and clothesmaking in her early years, Poznanski’s painting brings the customary viewing politics to a more complex physical encounter with sewing, stitching and hand-dyeing techniques subtly incorporated into her painting compositions. The painstaking process of making constellations of the fragmented fabric remains, which are casually collected from her grandparent’s house in Warsaw and then galvanized with a diluted earthy colour palette, has imbued her images with a nebulous recollection of personal experience and fictionalized reality. The painted figures usually evoke feelings of longing and loss, decontextualized from history and narratives through the material order in her work. Poznanski delves into the mechanism of collective memories and the structure of individual consciousness by staging and deconstructing mundane existences of objects and stories to locate and dislocate oneself in time and space. Poznanski’s recent solo exhibitions include: Children of Omerta, Lo Brutto Stahl, Paris, 2023; Tubamirum; A Missive for the Daffodils, Simo Bacar Gallery, Lisbon, 2022; and Stories Not Systems, Montague, London, 2019. Group exhibitions include: ART021, Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai, 2023; Conduits, Lo Brutto Stahl, Paris, 2023; Cemetery of Splendor, Piktogram, Warsaw, 2023; Palomar, Simo Bacar Gallery, Lisbon, 2023; ZEIT, house of spouse, Vienna, 2022; It could have been easy but it was still nice, Mother Culture, Berlin, 2020; Fool's Prophecy, Icon Museum, Warsaw, 2018; The Meeting of Failures, SPACE, London, 2014; and a performance with Resonance FM, Raven Row, London, 2011. Poznanski is also part of the writing collective “Everyone Agrees” which has published “The Night” and “After The Night” with Book Works, London.
