Artist
MICHAEL & CHIYAN HO
Michael Ho (b. 1991 in Arnhem, Netherlands) and Chiyan Ho (b. 1993 in Hertfordshire, UK) are an artist duo live and work in London, UK. They both graduated from the Architectural Association in 2019 and started collaboration in 2020. As second-generation immigrants from China, Michael and Chiyan Ho investigate the notions of the Chinese diaspora, cultural mismatch, and subsequently cultural rediscovery through their painting practice. They employ a specific technique of painting from back to front, superimposing diluted images with resolved brush strokes, clashing Eastern traditions with Western aesthetics. Their critical engagement with the orientalist images and tropes is multifold: from the playful to the political and from the erotic to the domestic. Their solo exhibition includes: Kūnlún, V.O Curations, London, 2021. They have been featured in group exhibitions at ICA, London; Gallery Vacancy, Shanghai; Intersticio, Madrid; Soft Opening, London; and Delphian Gallery, London. Their short film Empty Orchestra was screened at Piccadilly Circus, London, and the short film Lucky House will be shown at the ICA, London in 2022. Michael & Chiyan Ho will have a solo exhibition at Gallery Vacancy in 2022.
