“日未言吾 hidden words” is the given title to the inaugural exhibition of GALLERY VACANCY in Shanghai, the two Chinese characters meaning “hidden words”. Yet, translated in English and read separately backward, the components and radicals of two Chinese characters are decoded, “our words are yet to be defined”. The exhibition featuring artists from different regions to introduce their practices with diverse medium and explore the vocabularies in their art in which anxiety, failure, irony and search of identity bring forth a dialogue among works of each other. Through the making process, texts, objects, bodies and labor employed by the selected group of artists in this exhibition unravel the relationship between their perception of the world and the distanced history. Notions of form and function given by modernity and its industry then perform here not merely as a vessel but also a parallel attempt to present the desire for a universal language across the barrier of culture and time.

David Adamo makes minimalist installations of neat rows of baseball bats or bronze casts of smashed tomatoes, which won him a slot in Whitney Biennial 2010, read as high-minded critiques that exploit the contrast between the pristine world inside art institutions and the raw aggression percolating outside. His 2007 piece for Performa, for which he stood in front of Sargent’s “Madame X” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for an entire day, criticized the prevailing enshrinement machinery of the art world in our days.
Using metal plates and marble, Devin Farrand explores the meaning of industry that is esteemed as the foundation of American culture established by manufacturing and the value of laboring. Exposed to a diverse range of mechanics, Farrand’s art pays tribute to this lineage while also building his own distinctive vernacular. Inspired by the intersection of aesthetics and production, shop equipment and industrial materials are transformed into streamlined minimal objects.
黄凯雨 HUANG, Kaiyu
In the recent series of work, artist Huang Kaiyu paints faces of acquaintance or people happen to be around him on pieces of wood and board. Through vibrant color palette and flat smears of paint applied on to the wood surface, figures are given bizarre expressions and awkward movements as if characters we may find in a sitcom episode. The way to present his painted images takes also an important role in his work.
黄彦彦 HUANG, Yanyan
Huang Yanyan first photographs portions of her drawings and paintings, then digitally arranges these fragments to create complex collages that impart explosive, sprawling movement onto the fluid formlessness of silk to create her silk panels. Her wallpaper, meanwhile, functions as a modern-day fresco. It decisively transforms the character of a given space, bringing her flowing and tangled accumulations of lush and elegant gesture to an immersive, architectural scale.
刘亚洲 LIU, Yazhou
Liu Yazhou, born in 1990, graduated from the Sichaun Academy Fine Arts Sculpture Department, and then nominated as honored student from the grad school in Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing. Through assembling and dismantling, Liu’s body of work encourages viewers to pay attention to the mystic but easily neglected balance of transient statics as well as the coincidence when the two or multiple objects match without calculated arrangement. The project “Track/Locus” is presented in Gallery Yang.
